Village London: Past & present - Neil Grant

Village London Past and Present is a pictorial evocation of the changing face of Greater London over two thousand years, from the Romans to the present day. The book concentrates on the last 150 years when development was at its greatest and the advent of photography provided a delightful visual legacy of London and its life. Village London Past and Present looks at the region through eight areas:

• The City and its Vicinity

• Westminster and the West End

• The River Downstream

• The River Upstream

• The North West: Middlesex

• The North East: Epping and Essex

• The South East: Downe to Dulwich

• The South West: The Brighton Road

Many of the old photographs are from the Francis Frith Collection supplemented with photographs from other local collections in and around London, and the book features colour photographs taken at the same location and from the same position as the old images to show how the view has changed over the years.

With an illuminating and authoritative text, Village London Past and Present is an unusual record of the history of Britain’s capital and a fascinating look at the development of a city and its people which will enthral Londoner and visitor alike.
