The Caucasian chalk circle - Bertolt Brecht
The Caucasian chalk circle - Bertolt Brecht
Writing in exile in the United States during the Second World War, Brecht borrowed from the ancient Chinese story - echoed in the Judgement of Solomon - in which two women both claim the same child, and subverted it into a parable advocating the idea that resources should go to those best able to make use of them. Thanks to the rascally judge, Azdak, one of Brecht's most vivid creations, natural justice is done and the peasant Grusha keeps the child she loves but is not mother to.
