Sizzlers: The hate crime that tore Sea Point apart - Nicole Engelbrecht (First edition)

On 20 January 2003, ten men were tied up and brutally attacked at Sizzlers, a gay massage parlour in Sea Point, Cape Town. Despite having his throat slit and being shot twice in the head, Quinton Taylor somehow managed to drag himself to a nearby petrol station. As the sole survivor, he held the key to identifying the perpetrators.

The two killers, Adam Woest and Trevor Theys, were subsequently arrested and convicted, receiving multiple life sentences. In his closing statement, the presiding judge described their actions as "a crime of unparalleled savagery".

But what was the motive for this vicious blood bath? The killers claimed it was a robbery gone wrong, but there appeared to be far more at play.

In 2018, Adam Woest, the sole surviving killer and the most brutal of the pair, came up for parole. For those who had lived the previous two decades deeply traumatised by the Sizzlers massacre, this was a travesty of justice – and they would not let it happen without a fight.
