Roy Campbell was born in Durban in 1901 and educated at Durban High School. In 1919 he left for Europe where, as poet, bullfighter, translator and war-correspondent, he became, like Hemingway, a legend in his own time.
He published many volumes of poetry and a well-known autobiography, Light on a Dark Horse (1951).
Campbell achieved instant fame when The Flaming Terrapin was published in 1924 and he is still recognised as one of the great poets of the twentieth century. He died in 1957 in a motor accident in Portugal, where he had settled with his family after World War II.
This selection of his poetry is the most comprehensive ever published in South Africa.
