‘You could say it all began with the arrival of the relief ship. Or you could say it started two or three years before that, with the disappearance of Harmony’s sister, Melody. But I think myself it began the day I saw the Creature prowling around the garbage...’

From that day, Vector, the narrator of this story, found all his inherited assumptions about the nature of Creatures being called into question. He himself was a Person, a member of the species who had travelled from the planet Annulus and founded a colony on Earth. Despite their assumptions of superiority, all is not well with the Persons in the Colony, for over the years, genetic problems have arisen which make their survival doubtful; and the very care taken to ensure their continued existence poses a threat to Vector and his girl-friend, Harmony. The arrival of the ‘relief’ ship means that they must take speedy action to safeguard their future together.
