Killdeer Mountain begins in the rainy dusk near a dock on the Missouri River in 1866. Journalist Sam Morrison is looking for a story for the St. Louis Herald, and he finds one in the subject of Charles Rawley, Civil War hero and Indian fighter. Was he a man of courage and principle, or was he a coward? As this tale is told — in many versions by as many witnesses — the details of the past emerge, but the narratives quickly begin to tangle. Morrison realizes that he’s listening to the pieces of a story far more complex and contradictory than any of the tellers suspect. And, as the tale unfolds, Morrison becomes haunted by the hollow-eyed man who boards the steamer under cover of night, only to disappear just as suddenly.
