Hermeneutics can be defined as the theory of the interpretation of meaning, and as such is a central topic in the philosophy of the social sciences, the philosophy of art and language, and literary criticism. Contemporary Hermeneutics presents an introduction to this subject, locating it mainly within the philosophy of social science, and looking at the profound impact it is having on a wide range of intellectual pursuits.

Within the embrace of hermeneutics, one can distinguish three main strands: hermeneutics as the theory and method of textual interpretation; philosophical hermeneutics or philosophy of culture; and ‘new hermeneutics’, in which a fusion has taken place between elements of phenomenology, existentialism, linguistic philosophy, philosophy of language, psychoanalysis, and the critical theory of the Frankfurt School. The author discusses these three areas with reference to the present debates in the methodology of social science, aiming at revealing their differences and common concerns. The discussion is based on, and accompanied by, a stimulating and representative selection of texts by the five major writers in the field, Betti, Gadamer, Ricoeur, Apel and Habermas, giving the reader a first-hand acquaintance with the subject matter of hermeneutics and the main debates within this new and challenging field.
