The African elephant is possibly the most studied animal on the continent, and much of the research on this animal has resulted in publications that have brought great joy and knowledge to countless people around the world. Nonetheless, we still have a great deal to learn about elephants, especially in a rapidly changing world, and it is going to take a concerted effort on the part of many to ensure their long-term survival.

In African Elephants, Nigel Dennis - one of Africa's great photographers - has captured these gentle giants in moments of playful frolicking, communication and bonding, challenge and breeding. With his inimitable photographic talent, he has brought the elephants of Africa - from Addo to Kruger, and Etosha to Amboseli - into our living rooms, while Clive Walker - conservationist and natural history writer of note - has, with obvious insight and devotion, described their habits and habitats.

We are treated to the rare sight of desert-dwelling elephants of the Kaokoveld as they cross the dry riverbed systems of this arid land. Humankind's impact on areas such as this is evident, and a constant reminder that each and every one of us has a role to play in the conservation of elephants. It is the purpose of African Elephants to serve to encourage man - the intruder in the elephant's world - to respect the sacred ground of the elephant, and in this way to ensure the continued survival of this magnificent beast.
