He is the author of many published works of both prose and poetry, including books on cookery. During World War I he was appointed medical officer to General Louis Botha and accompanied him during the South West Africa campaign. In 1924 he stood as a candidate in the general election for the South African Party. A journalist of some repute, he spent some time as assistant editor of \u003cem data-start=\"1207\" data-end=\"1220\"\u003eDe Volkstem\u003c\/em\u003e. He also became the first editor of the \u003cem data-start=\"1261\" data-end=\"1292\"\u003eSouth African Medical Journal\u003c\/em\u003e.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-start=\"1295\" data-end=\"1451\"\u003e\u003cem data-start=\"1295\" data-end=\"1312\"\u003eBushveld Doctor\u003c\/em\u003e is rich with anecdote and insight.
